light a candle

light a candle

this site states: "in many different traditions lighting candles is a sacred action. it expresses more than words can express. it has to do with gratefulness. from time immemorial, people have lit candles in sacred places. why should cyberspace not be sacred?"

here is where you can light a cyber candle for any occassion. you can label it and stat what country you're from. come back hours later and you can see your candle still there... just burned down a little.

the chumby

i love finding stuff that is in it's beta stage. you feel like you're getting in on something at the ground level... before anyone else knows about it. i don't know how many people know about the "chumby," but it is a new product that looks like it may have some potential.

here's the unofficial definition of a chumby (taken from the site):
the starting point was a humble clock radio. we built a really low-cost, wireless (wi-fi), internet-connected device that will sit on your bedside table or anywhere you would like. but it can do more than a clock radio.

the site goes on to explain: it's designed to show pictures that your friends send you from their cellphones, and messages from your IM buddies, your blogs and social network sites. it can display your daily horoscope and the weather, and a whole community of artists and animators can send their creations around the chumby network to entertain you.

since it's being designed and developed by a group of "hackers," they encourage other hackers to use their expertise to change and/or add to the functionality of the device. and they want designers to help in creating different "skins." i think that's cool. any hackers or designers out there?

the "chumby" isn't for sale yet but they say they will be soon. so keep your eyes open or sign-up to be notified when they do make their premiere.

one red paperclip

one red paperclip

have you heard about this? this guy had the vision and commitment to start with one red paperclip and by trading it and subsequent items, hoped to end up with a house. well, he did it. he now has a house.

go to his site and read about the trades that occurred to get him to his goal of a house. he has a sense of humor and it's all interesting reading. i personally liked the entry about the snow globe. this guy really has imagination and vision. i'm hoping he'll start some new project.

ping-a-pal

another "hard to explain" site. you can design your own animations to then send off to someone. the site has a gallery of well made ones that are fun to watch or can inspire you in your own creativity. you just have to go to the site and play around a bit.
